A Hero of Romanticism

A hero of romanticism – to the 200th jubilee of F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy

 

Our programme can be persumed as being a tribut to one of the greatest German composers, the hero of Romanticism, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

It is a programme which is in the spirit of the famous “Sunday Music” at Mendelssohns´.

The critic Ludwig Rellstab wrote about their programme design, that they present “the connection of classic works of old times with the best of new times in highest performance”. Rellstabe spoke of the “Sunday Music” as a “rare artisic celebration”.

In our programme we present rarities of romantic music for the viola and piano from composers of F. Mendelssohn´s inner circle, from R. Schumann to C. Reinecke, the later follower of Mendelssohn on the orchestra master´s position. We keep true to the concept of Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn´s programme design, who “predominately brought pieces on stage, that never or seldom were performed” (Prof. Dr. B. Borchard). Therefore, our viola arrangements are in this programme, which was only made for this programme.

The performance is completed by the moderation, which contains extracts of Mendelssohn´s correspondence and reminiscence of R. and C. Schumann.
